What are the most common obstacles to a successful deliverance?
Many people approach deliverance expecting a quick, effortless fix—what some call a “drive-thru deliverance.” In fact, about 40% of applicants drop out after their initial interview when they realize that true freedom requires personal effort.
Deliverance is not a magic trick; it is a collaborative process with the Holy Spirit. Here is the revised order of the seven main barriers that prevent people from walking into total freedom:
1. Pride and Image-Protecting
Many long-time Christians choose to suffer in silence because they are terrified of ruining their reputation or admitting they need help. Please know that deliverance ministers have "heard it all." Our goal is never to judge or shame you—our only goal is your freedom. Do not let pride stand between you and your breakthrough.
2. A Hidden Love for Sin
You cannot be successfully delivered from a sin you secretly want to keep committing. Deliverance is for those who want Jesus at the center of their lives. If a person values a specific lifestyle or vice more than their freedom, the torment will likely remain.
3. Refusing to Face Buried Emotional Wounds
Deep deliverance often requires digging up old hurts, trauma, and emotional pain. Out of fear, many people choose to keep these painful memories buried deep inside. However, wounds must be brought to the surface before the Holy Spirit can heal them.
4. Fear of Exposing Past Sins
Lingering spiritual legal ground can remain from past mistakes, even if they have already been forgiven by God. True breakthroughs often happen when you bring these hidden areas into the light. Confessing your struggles to a trustworthy minister breaks the enemy’s power and invites profound physical and emotional healing (James 5:16).
5. Avoiding the "Crucifixion" of the Flesh
Some individuals assume that every single struggle they face is demonic. While spirits certainly amplify problems, the root issue is often an undisciplined flesh. Deliverance cannot cast out your fleshly desires; you must choose to crucify them daily and take responsibility for your choices.
6. Resisting Long-Term Self-Discipline
True freedom requires a lifetime commitment to spiritual health. Just as a pill cannot guarantee permanent weight loss without a change in diet, a single prayer cannot keep you free if you refuse to build healthy, long-term spiritual habits
7. Rejecting Church Community and Spiritual Authority
Isolation is dangerous. Some people want deliverance but refuse to commit to a local church fellowship. Without a spiritual umbrella and a community to support them, they stand alone. This leaves them highly vulnerable to falling back into old habits, often ending up in a worse state than before (Luke 11:24-26).
